The art and precision of architectural lighting lie in achieving the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics. This custom globe light installation from architectural firm HLW International, designed by Spark Studio Lighting Design, and a custom-built lighting fixture featuring Opal Balls from Baselite, is a beautiful example of how thoughtful lighting choices can redefine a space.
The Spark Studio Lighting Design team describes the custom globe light installation as a dynamic feature that “follows the movement down an interconnecting stair, seamlessly integrating with the adjacent work lounge space.”
Addressing stability, they state: “Stability is essential with the installation located on the 39th floor of a tower in an earthquake-prone region. Comprised of 11 seismic-braced rods of varying heights and 37 globes in two sizes, the spacing and angle of each rod and globe are placed precisely in coordination with the narrow stair opening.”

The Design
This custom globe light installation gracefully follows the flow of an interconnecting staircase, with each light strategically positioned to enhance the architectural curves and draw the eye upward. The design seamlessly blends modern, artistic elements with the adjacent work lounge, featuring clean lines and complementary tones.
The Precision
Stability is paramount for this installation, situated on the 39th floor of a tower in an earthquake-prone area. The design features 11 seismic-braced rods of varying heights and 37 globes in two distinct sizes. Each rod and globe is meticulously positioned, with precise spacing and angles, to align perfectly with the constraints of the narrow stairwell opening.

The Outcome
The result is a beautifully balanced harmony between form and function, where light is not just a passive feature but becomes an active, dynamic element that enhances the architecture. It interacts with the space, creating depth, mood, and a sense of connection between the structure and its surroundings.
